Sheep Shank

You should never cut a rope to shorten it. What a waste that is! That’s
where the sheep shank comes in – it’s a shortening knot. With
the sheep shank, you can shorten a knot without damaging it. But be forewarned
– the know will untie if it’s not under tension, so don’t
expect it to hold without a little bet of elbow grease. If you need to have
the knot last long without pressure, use some half hitches at each end of
the knot to prevent it from un-doing itself. Use no more than five. The
addition of half hitches also lets you select the exact length of the rope
you made shorter with the sheep shank.
